Today I want to share with you one truth about me. I never outright believe how people describe themselves. Not because I have any negative predisposition about their trustworthiness. On the contrary, I try always to be positive when I am meeting a new person. I want to believe that they will be proved to be a good character and I behave accordingly. The reasons are different and I will thoroughly explain below. At the same time, I don’t think that way because of egotistical reasons. Because the truth is that many times I don’t even trust my own beliefs about my emotions, my actions and the reasons behind so I have to question them. And this leaves open the possibility that I won’t come to a perfectly rational conclusion.
It’s a fact that we the humans most of the times have the perception that we are distinct from other animals. That there exists a line between mankind and the rest of the animal kingdom. This serves as a very good excuse when we want to exploit them in experiments or in food industries or […]
Human beings through all their history and definitely today still have demonstrated a selective consciousness. This selectiveness is caused by the fact that the brain is not able to gather all the available information it comes across, it has finite capabilities. As a result there have been evolved efficient unconscious mechanisms that favour the choosing […]
So the mind in the same way can be working as a great fitness indicator. Its complex and costly behaviors such as art and language might be advertising our fitness to potential mates. If sexual selection favored the minds that advertised high fitness, our creative intelligence could have evolved not because it gives us any survival advantage, instead because it is so difficult to be achieved and do not help more than moderately in our survival. It is not only humans that use complex behavior to advertise their fitness. Songbirds’ fitness indicators are repeated complicated melodious songs. Fruitflies do little dances in front of one another to reveal their genetic quality. To understand better, all these fitness indicators are what advertisements are to products. They are costly, excessive and luxurious. Dancing, language, humor, creative intelligence, all are evolutionary luxuries, none of them helped more than moderately to our survival. As fascist as it may sound, all these in the very end is another way to say “I am fit, my genes are good, mate with me”.
When we talk about emotions most people define them as something like feelings that are either pleasant, so they say that they like to have them, or unpleasant so they don’t want to have these feelings again. These feelings come from experiences or thoughts that are positive or negative. One way or the other they […]
In everyday life we are making decisions whose outcomes affect others. A friend may ask us for a favour, we might have business relations with some people etc. Every one of us has sometime felt betrayed by a friend that stopped creating that, up to that point successful, “chain” of mutual cooperation between us. There are people that we define as cheaters and others that we are sure that can be trusted. There are others that we trust and we are proved to be mistaken. Or people often try to gain the trust of others in order to delude them. Although society is supposed to be teaching the ethics of cooperation for centuries now, experience shows that deceit is very common in humanity either we like it or not. The reason is that deceit looks sweet.
“Let’s go out pick some girls”. This is a very typical phrase for human males when they are heading to a party or to a club. I mention this because I have to admit that it was a phrase very typically used by me, too, in my earlier years although the results most of the […]
Everyone ought to be proud that we carry the genes of an uncut chain of million ancestors who managed under conditions more difficult than ours to survive and reproduce. That was the first lesson. The possibilities are demonstrably more, much more than we can imagine. Just no one ever explained this to us. […]
